My son has one of those jobs that allows him to maintain his anonymity.
Being autistic, he doesn’t like to be around a lot of people.
People make him nervous and he can’t focus. I asked him why he wanted to be an HVAC technician. He told me he can hide out in the basement wherever he goes. I wondered what he did when he had to work on air conditioning units, but that was a simple question. Being in the sunshine soothed him. Ever since he was a child, he would stand out in the middle of the yard and soak up the sun. When he first wanted to be an HVAC tech, I wasn’t so sure it was a good idea. He helped my husband all the time. He was always working on the furnace or air conditioning unit, with his dad. He changed the air filters all the time, and he never had to look at the calendar to see if it was time to change them. He had a mental calendar and he said he could look at it whenever he wanted to. I don’t remember a single time when he had to look at the calendar. My husband told me to allow our son to try HVAC school. Being the owner of the local HVAC company, he was able to help him as he got into different areas of HVAC. Come to find out, he excelled in his chosen profession. Working with his dad all those years, gave him confidence and he learned quickly. Although he prefers to hide out in the basements and work on furnaces, he is also excellent with air conditioning units, and his customers now request him by name.
