They wouldn't refund our currency separate from a receipt

Last year while I was in the annual clearance sale, our husband and I bought a brand modern Heating and A/C unit for the living room.

I never had the chance to use the modern Heating and A/C unit, so the first time the two of us hooked it up and turned it on was about 6 weeks after the two of us made the clearance sale purchase. I expected no complications with the setup, and it was a breeze. The greatest problem was the fact that the machine would not turn on when the two of us hooked up the power. I evaluated the breaker and the fuse box. I didn’t see anything that would cause a problem. The people I was with and I tried another outlet and the problem seemed to be the Heating and A/C unit. I told our wife that the two of us were going to need to take the machine back to the hardware store. I asked her if she remembered where the receipt was placed after the two of us bought the A/C unit. She did not even remember keeping the receipt. I was hoping that the store would have a copy of our receipt on file. I took the Heating and A/C machine to the store and they were not going to return it separate from a receipt. Even after they found the order under our credit card, they still refused to refund our currency because I did not have the original receipt from the sale. The best they could do was offer myself and others store credit to purchase something else. I was actually quite aggravated with the entire situation, although I did not suppose there was anything I could do.
