Strange place for an HVAC system

I can recall this one house I was renting some years ago, and the most odd thing about it was where the central heating and air conditioning system unit was placed.

  • The central heating and air conditioning system was actually in the garage! I am not kidding! I have seen hot water heaters and hot water boilers in garages before, but never a central heating and air conditioning system unit until this.

One of the times the heating and air conditioning company was out at the rental home and was doing one of their HVAC tune ups and check ups, I was asking them what the reason was for the central heating and air conditioning system unit to be in the garage instead of the side of the house like most central heating and air conditioning units are placed. They told me it was because of the build of the house, where and how the ductwork was laid and how the air vents to the central heat and a/c unit were installed into the home. That made sense to me, but wow, that is quite an usual house lay out to have to have the central heating and air conditioning system unit placed in the garage! At least the place to change the air filters of the central heating and air conditioning system were in a decent place in the house right in the hallway by the thermostat on the wall. The thermostat that was on the wall I remember was one of those older dial thermostats. And of course, the central heating and air conditioning system was also an older model.
