My HVAC tech thought he heard ‘The Tell Tale Heart’.

I offered him a cup of coffee while he told me about the furnace work.

I was in the basement doing my laundry when the HVAC technician arrived. I always took my baby monitor along with me when I was in the basement. If the baby did anything but breathe, I was running up the steps. I had the volume up so high that I could hear his heartbeat and his breathing. I forgot about the baby monitor when the HVAC technician arrived. The washer and dryer were five feet from the furnace, and the baby monitor was on the washer. Not five minutes after the HVAC technician went downstairs, I heard him humming to himself, and it was getting louder. I went downstairs to grab the baby monitor. I apologized for disrupting him, but I needed the baby monitor for upstairs. I kept it near me in case the baby woke up. He took a deep breath and smiled. When the furnace repairs were completed, he came back upstairs to report on the status of my furnace and what he had found wrong. I offered him a cup of coffee while he told me about the furnace work. When we were done with the paperwork, he stood and then sat back down. He asked if I had ever read ‘The Tell Tale Heart’? I remembered reading in when I was in school. It was a story about a man who murdered someone and kept hearing the heartbeat. He said he kept hearing the heartbeat from the baby monitor and it had freaked him out so much that he was getting ready to leave the furnace and let someone else do the repairs when I came downstairs.
