Not sleeping makes me tired at work all day

I haven’t been sleeping very well at night for the last 2 weeks.

My girlfriend broke up with me and moved out of our apartment.

Ever since she left, the bed has felt very lonely and uncomfortable. I toss and turn all night long. The lack of sleep is really affecting my job during the day. I have to be alert, because I work on HVAC machinery all day. Some jobs are more difficult than others and they require concentration and a steady hand. I almost fell asleep yesterday when I went to work on a boiler repair. I was the only person in the basement where the boiler is located. It was very warm and cozy in the boiler room. I sat down on the floor for a minute to think about the problem and I fell asleep for 25 minutes. I only woke up because there was a loud bang on the roof. I’m very lucky that the owner of the business didn’t find me fast asleep on the floor. The lady probably would have called my boss to complain and I might have been fired. That 25 minute nap was the best sleep I’ve had in two weeks though. I’m so tired and depressed and most of my friends are happy that my girlfriend and I broke up. They didn’t like the way she was bossy with me. They thought she was the reason why I never want to go hang out at the bar. I can’t talk to anyone about the way that I am feeling, but I think it might help me stop feeling so upset.

No, you don’t need to cover the A/C in the rain

I have this one uncle who thinks he knows everything about everything. I am sure there is a know-it-all in every family but I doubt they are all as insufferable as my uncle is. However, over the years I have learned to completely ignore him. I just pretend he doesn’t exist or that he isn’t talking to me. It seems to work pretty good. Especially now that I am an adult. My aunt, his wife, thinks I am incredibly rude but I don’t care. Anyway, I was through a large family get-together in my backyard when it started to rain. We all grabbed the food and dashed inside of the house. My uncle said, “shouldn’t you cover your air conditioner?” I ignored him but he kept insisting that I needed to go outside and cover my air conditioner compressor. This is completely not necessary. I don’t even have a cover. If you keep the compressor free of leaves, elevated on the platform it is installed on, and hire HVAC technicians every now and again you are not going to have issues with a little rain. And yet my uncle kept insisting someone go out and cover the air conditioner compressor. Finally I had had enough and I told him to stop. I explained that I never, not once, had an issue with the rain hurting my air conditioner compressor. He kept going on and on though. A week later I found out my uncle had to replace his air conditioner compressor. Why? Because he ran the A/C with a cover on it in the heat. It got fried. Now who’s laughing?

Open HVAC system ends up stinking

This area is usually very comfortable.

I can get by with just an open window and a ceiling fan most of the time. But this year has been nothing but non stop rain. It is hard to keep a window open when it won’t stop raining outside. Thankfully my HVAC system can be switched to an open system. That means that it takes air from outside rather than inside the house. I just turn the thermostat to the fan setting and then go to the utility shed and change it to “open”. Then nice air from outside circulates throughout the whole house but no rain water gets in. It is very nice. Too bad I haven’t used this capability in more than a few years. So when I finally did use it, a terrible stench circulated the house. It smelled like an outhouse. It was disgusting. I opened a few windows, in the rain, then hoped that the smell would just air itself out and go away. After 30 minutes it became clear that this was not going to happen. I had to turn off the HVAC fan and then keep the windows open while running the ceiling fan. Then I had to put towels in all the windowsills. After that I called up our HVAC supplier. I wasn’t sure if the smell was just because of the open system or if there was something very wrong with out HVAC system. It turned out it was just the open system. There was a bunch of dirt, mold, and a dead bird in the intake area. That is all cleaned out now. The HVAC technicians put up a mesh screen so no more stuff gets through into the tubing either. Now, if it would just stop raining, I would be happy as a clam.

I question restaurants HVAC choices

I work in HVAC repair and this pandemic has been pretty good for business.

I mean I understand the desire for a whole-home filtration system. Those systems kill and trap any virus or bacterial germs that are trying to circulate through the HVAC system. I also understand the whole-home humidifiers. There is evidence that virus germs dye quickly in high humidity. Then there are the people who just want HEPA filters or stronger filters installed in their central heating and air. What I don’t understand is the restaurants who want ductwork rerouted to the outside. Yes, I do understand the struggle to stay afloat when the government is putting restrictions on everything. My city has laws right now that restaurants are only allowed to serve outdoor diners. This is because UV light and fresh air lower your risk of virus exposure. In fact, most whole-home air purifiers use little UV lights to kill the viruses that pass under it. So do the HEPA filters, for that matter. However, many restaurants are closing in their outdoor dining areas with plywood, plastic sheeting, and other things. Then they are hiring HVAC technicians like me to come and reroute HVAC ductwork so that it cools or heats these “outdoor” areas. So this, essentially, blocks off all fresh air and UV lighting. No, these outdoor areas are not completely sealed up. That can’t really be achieved with those kinds of materials. However, I don’t see how that is any safer than just eating inside of the restaurant. At least a few restaurants are getting the whole-home purification systems installed at the same time. But not many of them do.

I want a hotel with a quiet HVAC system

I am a really light sleeper.

  • For this reason I hate traveling.

It is hard enough to fall asleep, and stay asleep, in my own bed with my quiet HVAC system. But, for some reason, hotel HVAC systems are always super noisy. Add to that the fact that I am sleeping in a strange bed, with strange smells, and I find sleeping in a hotel almost impossible. So when my husband wanted to book a romantic getaway I felt very stressed. On the one hand, we really could use some time away from it all. On the other hand, I really could use some sleep too. I didn’t see that happening with a noisy hotel HVAC system. I got stressed about this and so I talked to my psychologist. She suggested that I take my own pillow, take some scented candles, and that I call around and find a hotel that doesn’t use PTAC systems. She explained that PTAC systems are those individual window units that many hotels use. She said that more modern hotels have central heating and air with zone control in every room. Or they have ductless mini split systems. Both are way quieter than PTAC systems. Of course, bringing my own pillow and scented candles will also serve to make the hotel room a little more like my own room and should help me sleep. I decided to give it a try. I called up a few hotels before I found one with a ductless mini split system. I was assured it was very quiet. Now I am looking forward to our trip away. This is going to be fun.

I got an HVAC business that troubleshoots my ac problems remotely

But I had to pay for HVAC installation after buying HVAC products for sale that integrate with such a system to be able to also enjoy the subsidized air conditioner service plan that comes with it

The widespread Covid19 pandemic did present us with serious challenges that prompted everyone to practice social distancing. Thankfully, technological advancement has made it possible for some businesses to thrive or adjust to such setbacks and turn things around for the better. In light of the situation, many businesses temporarily or permanently closed down because of the loss of business or other reasons, but not my local heating and cooling provider. He decided to stay put and adjust to the changes. Since he understands more about HVAC, he has kept up to date with the latest HVAC technology trends to serve us better. Personally, I limit visits from local service providers, especially if it’s something that requires them to get into my house to fix or review such as my HVAC system, air purifier, or central air conditioning. To avoid losses, the HVAC business can troubleshoot my quality air conditioner problems from the comfort of his office by using mobile app technology. But I had to pay for HVAC installation after buying HVAC products for sale that integrate with such a system to be able to also enjoy the subsidized air conditioner service plan that comes with it. The other benefit I enjoy is better seer ratings that improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Now I can comfortably monitor my system from anywhere using the app as well as have the provider monitor it for any anomalies. At least I won’t have to worry much about an HVAC serviceman coming around for HVAC maintenance unless I develop a major malfunction that requires in-person review.

Zoning technology helps us cope at home with our new HVAC technology

I had to engage the services of an HVAC serviceman from a local HVAC business to help me figure out how to use or adjust the central air conditioning.

For a long time, I kept saying I’d buy a new ac system but I kept postponing the idea. My recently uninstalled system was just as efficient but it was an old model that lacked several things. So when the whole family started more time at home, I foresaw a potential conflict on the setting the right temperature for the house. At first, I thought the kids would be sensible about their needs but that only happened in my presence. Whenever I was away from home, all I’d hear is that so and so wouldn’t let me adjust the thermostat or mom did this or that. I knew there was a way to set the HVAC system to cool or warm different rooms separately but I didn’t know how to do it even after reading more about HVAC hacks. I had to engage the services of an HVAC serviceman from a local HVAC business to help me figure out how to use or adjust the central air conditioning. Despite the attempt, my system was not optimized for zoning and the solution was to exchange it for a more advanced HVAC technology. The ones with better seer ratings don’t come cheap either but I had to make a sacrifice for the family to have a quality air conditioner that allows for zoning. Since such swaps are not covered in my air conditioner service plan, I applied for a new HVAC installation to improve the heating and cooling needs around the house and even added an air purifier after shopping around for suitable HVAC products for sale. At least this would last me a while before I start budgeting for HVAC maintenance.

Indoor comfort business

The more we stay indoors the more we use our central air conditioning

For starters, we live in a very well-lit house with large windows, so to minimize overlying on central air conditioning for cooling, we hardly use the HVAC system during the day unless it is absolutely necessary or there’s a sudden weather change prompting us to turn it on.

I remember a time when everyone used to leave home almost at the same time, and the kids would come back home earlier from school. It was routine and normal back then. We spent less on food and bills compared to now. But now, no one hardly leaves the house. The furthest we go as a family is either to the park or shopping. Just like my neighbors and friends, everyone seems to complain about the high energy bills we have become accustomed to. Luckily for us, my husband foresaw this coming and decided to learn more about HVAC best practices. This has helped us become more conscious of how we regulate and use heating and cooling. For starters, we live in a very well-lit house with large windows, so to minimize overlying on central air conditioning for cooling, we hardly use the HVAC system during the day unless it is absolutely necessary or there’s a sudden weather change prompting us to turn it on. My husband has also been keeping up to date with the changes in the HVAC technology and shopping for more modern HVAC products for sale with better seer ratings. Our current system is not even covered with an air conditioner service plan so a change would mean quality air conditioner with reduced visits from an HVAC serviceman or HVAC business that markets their services around. I would like to get an air purifier as well since we don’t use the AC system much but that will depend on how much we spend on the new unit and the eventual HVAC installation. The upside would be little to no HVAC maintenance costs for a while.

Using an extra air purifier to guarantee we are breathing quality air at work

The threat of the ongoing pandemic did stop or slow down many human activities. Despite the dangers, life has to go on and at work, we had to make several adjustments to be able to cope with the situation. For once, we do not report to work every day except for Tuesday and Thursday. And that’s half-day attendance. The purpose is to have a physical and real-time interaction while observing social distancing. With the dangers of covid-19 in mind, the business has had to rearrange the office to reflect the situation we are dealing with. One major change I noticed when I walked back to the office was the additional air purifiers we have all over the office. Clearly, the internal HVAC serviceman has been hard at work. His department was tasked with ensuring the central air conditioning is in perfect condition. The cost of HVAC maintenance has significantly dropped but the company still pays for the air conditioner service plan to cater for any technical problems, the heating and cooling equipment might develop at any point. That also means no new tenders for HVAC products for sale in the near future as long as the current HVAC system is underutilized. The technician has now enrolled for a course in HVAC technology to learn more about HVAC and how to perform HVAC installation and better understand seer ratings. He is the only one in his department so that basically makes him an essential employee because without him around to troubleshoot our problems, we would have to rely on an outsourced HVAC business to service our quality air conditioner.

It was a dirty ductwork issue

For a long time I just lived with the fact that my house smelled like burnt hair.

Anytime the heating system kicked on, the burnt hair smell lingered in my air quality. I hated the odor but would eventually get used to it. The problem was I never wanted to have people over in the winter because I was so embarrassed by the smell. That finally gave me the kick in the butt I needed. I started researching what could be the cause of that foul smell in my home. I change my furnace filters every month to ensure there is no dust in them. I vacuumed out the inside and outside of my heating equipment to catch any left over debris or hair. Turns out the issue was in my ductwork. My ductwork was apparently coated in dust, dirt and hair. Once the heating system turned on, it would go in those polluted air ducts and cause the house to stink. Getting ductwork cleaning was easy, cheap and fixed my problem. The HVAC technician just stuck a giant hose up in the air ducts to suck out all the dirt. It was a really quick and gentle process. Back in the old days the contractors used to use a scrub brush and potentially damage the seams of the ducts. These professionals now hardly need to do a thing. Now that I have clean ductwork, I don’t have the awful smell and I don’t sneeze half as much in the morning. The cleaner air quality has helped with a lot of things.
