My work friends and I were sitting around discussing the joys of being an HVAC technician.
We all had our stories that had us laughing, and we had heartbreaking stories about HVAC jobs we had done.
No one came up with a story that made us wish we hadn’t become HVAC techs. When my dad showed up, he joined in on the discussion. He said that he had several stories to tell, but they involved the times when he no longer wanted to be an HVAC technician. He was telling us about a haunted house experience he had that scarred him for life, until he met the new owner, who was now my mother. He told us about a trip he took in a basement and landed in a sewage drain hole. He said there was no way he could get the stink off him for almost two days. The more he talked about the bad days he had as an HVAC technician, the more we laughed. Dad had been one of the best HVAC technicians in the state, and he now owned one of the best HVAC companies in the state. I think it has a lot to do with his humor and compassion. Every day is a new challenge and not a new day at the job. I’m proud to be one of his HVAC technicians, but I’m even more proud to say he’s my dad. One day, I hope I am able to sit in on a bull session with my HVAC technicians and make them feel like they are part of an elite group and not just HVAC technicians doing a job.
