I was on my way to fix a furnace for a family.
They had three little kids who weren’t even in school yet, and the husband said there was no heating.
My heart went out to the couple because I had three kids under the age of six. It was snowing so hard that I couldn’t see in front of me, and I was worried I wouldn’t get to the house to fix the furnace. I called another HVAC technician and asked him if he could get to the house. He lived less than a block from their home, and I wanted someone to get there to repair the furnace before the house cooled off completely. The husband assured me they had plenty of blankets and a couple of space heaters, but they had to stay in one room. My friend told me he could be there in five minutes, even if he had to walk. An hour later, he called me back and told me the furnace couldn’t be repaired that night. He had set the space heaters in the basement to keep the pipes from freezing and bundled up the kids. He was taking all five of them to his house until the furnace was repaired. I knew I had called the right man to take care of that furnace. Not only could he take care of the furnace, but he had a big heart. He wouldn’t let that family sit in a cold house for a couple of hours, and definitely not for a couple of days.
