Occasionally our dad thinks that he can repair a problem that should be left up to a professional.
When I was a kid, a lot of things in the cabin were not fixed properly, because our dad was working on them. The screen door on the front porch was broken because our dad did not guess how to repair the screen. The people I was with and I had complications with the car for weeks. My dad was convinced that he could repair the oil furnace and one time the two of us went separate from heat for a whole week. It was absolutely cold outside and the hot and cold temperatures were quite cold. Everyone in the cabin was hopeful that Dad would call a oil furnace maintenance service. He tried complicationshooting the machine a bunch of times and he was convinced various times in a row that he could solve the problem. On the 5th afternoon that the two of us did not have heat, our dad finally broke down and decided to call the oil furnace maintenance service. I swear that the maintenance professional was only in the cabin for an minute or more than one and he had the problem with the oil furnace fixed. After that, every time there was a problem, our mom insisted that our dad contact a maintenance service. If the two of us had a problem with the plumbing, she was not going to sit around for weeks and weeks and wait for our dad to repair it. I understand that he was trying to be a helpful guy, but it was better to let someone else do the task. My dad was a whiz with a calculator, however he didn’t guess the first thing about mechanics or engineering.
